Admission Requirements

  • You must meet requirements for a certification area in addition to meeting the basic admissions requirements.
  • You must have a personal e-mail account and access to a personal (not school) computer.
  • If you are using a Hotmail account, you must add iteachtexas.com to your contacts list.
I. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education as required by Texas Education Agency and the Texas Administration Code

II. Minimum 2.50 grade point average, which will be determined in one of the following ways:
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA (your undergraduate GPA as posted on conferred degree transcipt), or
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA in last 60 hours
  • Your graduating GPA must be calculated and posted by the university on your official transcripts. If your transcript does not reflect a graduation GPA, you will need to contact your college’s Registrar office to have a letter typed on University letterhead that includes your GPA sent in with your official transcripts.

III. Competency in reading, writing and math must be demonstrated at the time of application. This will be determined in one of the following ways:
  • Satisfied the TSI requirement by having a conferred degree, or
  • Passing score on the TASP/THEA (Reading - 230, Math - 230, Writing - 220), or
  • ACT (English - 23, Math - 21), or
  • SAT (Verbal - 500, Math - 450)

IV. Identification of Content Area. This will be determined in one of the following ways:
  • Conferred degree in a specific content area (see Certification Areas), or
  • ExCET/TExES content test passed, or
  • 12 hours in identified content areas of English, math, science, and social studies for EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist and EC-12 Special Education content areas

V. Successful review of candidate during pre-screening intruVIEW, which includes all written correspondence and oral communication with  personnel.
Are you currently enrolled in college?
If you are in the last semester of coursework toward a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education as required by Texas Education Agency and the Texas Administration Code, and you currently meet the admission requirements listed above, then you may be eligible for admission on a contingent basis.
  • Spring graduates may apply January 1 - May 1
  • Summer graduates may apply June 1 - August 1
  • Fall graduates may apply September 1 - December 1 To qualify for Contingency admittance, the following documentation must be provided by the above deadlines:
    • Copy of final semester schedule of classes
    • Letter of completion from academic advisor
    • Official transcripts through previous semester Once you are accepted as a Contingency candidate in the  alternative certification program, you are eligible to test and begin your coursework. Contingent candidates who seek standard admissions must meet all general admissions requirements outlined above and must provide an official transcript reflecting a conferred degree prior to receiving an iteachTEXAS Statement of Eligibility.
Did you graduate outside the U.S.?
Graduates from a university outside of the United States or U.S. territories must:
  • Provide proof of oral English language proficiency by having a score of 79 or higher on the Internet based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) test.
  • Provide competency in reading, writing and mathematics through the THEA/TASP, ACT, SAT or GRE. (Please view required scores above.)
  • Provide Verification of Work Authorization Status: If not a U.S. citizen, verification of lawful permanent residence and a copy of current Green Card must be provided at the time of application with atleast 3 years of employment eligibility.
  • An original Foreign Credential Review from an approved agency must be provided if you graduated from a university outside the United States.
  • iteachTEXAS will not accept transcripts from a foreign university.
