Continuing Education/Professional Development: Overview
Beginning September 1, 1999, the state of Texas began issuing Standard Certificates to educators.
These certificates must be renewed every 5 years and one of the requirements for renewal is that
each educator must participate in and successfully complete a predetermined number of hours of
Continuing Professional Educational Development (CPE hours). The State Board of Education (SBEC)
will only accept CPE hours from a provider that has been approved and registered by SBEC.

in Continuing Education/Professional Development. The list of available courses is expanding as
develops additional CPE modules.
