Teacher Certification (Domestic): Admission Requirements

You must meet requirements for a certification area in addition to meeting the basic admissions requirements.

  • Must have a personal e-mail account and access to a personal (not school) computer.
  • If you are using a Hotmail account, you must add iteachtexas.com to your contacts list.

I. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education as required by Texas Education Agency and the Texas Administration Code

II. 2.5 Grade Point Average will be determined in one of the following ways:

  • 2.50 Overall GPA (your graduating undergraduate GPA), or
  • 2.50 GPA in last sixty hours prior to receiving conferred degree (If course work has been completed toward a Master's Degree or post-baccalaureate, it will be considered in the last sixty hours' GPA if it pertains to an certification content area), or
  • 2.50 GPA in content courses
  • Your graduating GPA must be calculated and posted by the university on your official transcripts.
  • Applicants who lack an overall GPA of a 2.5 or a 2.5 GPA in their last 60 hours of college coursework may only be eligible for initial certification in the content areas for which their GPA is a 2.5 or higher.
* When calculating GPA for a specific content area or in your last 60 hours, grades from all attempted courses applicable to the specific content area or last 60 hours will be considered.

III. Competency in reading, writing, and math must be demonstrated at the time of application.

You must provide proof of proficiency in reading at the time of application. Proficiency in reading may be demonstrated by one of the following:
  • B or better in 3 semester hours of English literature, listed on college transcripts, or
  • Passing score of 230 on the TASP/THEA reading, or
  • 81 Compass Reading Skills, or
  • 78 Accuplacer Reading Comprehension, or
  • 41 Asset Reading Skills, or
  • A score of 23 or higher on the English portion of the ACT, or
  • A score of 500 or higher on the verbal portion of the SAT, or
  • A score 350 or higher on the verbal portion of the GRE (within the last 5 years).
You must provide proof of proficiency in writing at the time of application. Proficiency in writing may be demonstrated by one of the following:
  • B or better in 3 semester hours of English Composition, listed on college transcripts, or
  • Passing score of 220 on the TASP/THEA writing, or
  • 6 on Compass Written Essay, or
  • 6 on Accuplacer Written Essay, or
  • 6 on Asset Written Essay, or
  • A score of 23 or higher on the English portion of the ACT, or
  • A score of 500 or higher on the verbal portion of the SAT, or
  • A score of 350 or higher on the verbal portion of the GRE (within the last 5 years).
You must provide proficiency in mathematics at the time of application. Proficiency in mathematics may be demonstrated by one of the following:
  • B or better in 3 semester hours of college algebra or a course higher than college algebra, listed on college transcript and must be taught under the MATH department, or
  • Passing score of 230 on the TASP/THEA math, or
  • 39 on Compass Algebra, or
  • 63 on Accuplacer Elementary Algebra, or
  • 38 on Asset Elementary Algebra, or
  • A score of 21 or higher on the math portion of the ACT, or
  • A score of 450 or higher on the math portion of the SAT, or
  • A score of 350 or higher on the quantitative portion of the GRE (within the last 5 years).

IV. Currently meeting the requirements for a certification area.

V. Successful review of candidate--includes all written correspondence and oral communication with personnel.

Graduates from a university outside of the United States & U.S. Territories must:

  • Provide proof of oral English language proficiency by having a score of 79 on the Internet based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) test.
  • Provide competency in reading, writing, and mathematics through the THEA/TASP, ACT, SAT or GRE. (Please view required scores above.)
  • Provide Verification of Work Authorization Status: If not a US citizen, verification of lawful permanent residence and a copy of current Green Card must be provided at the time of application.
  • An original Foreign Credential Review from an approved agency must be provided if you graduated from a university outside the United States. Transcripts from a foreign university will not be accepted by the program.

Provisional Requirements

If you are in the last semester of coursework toward a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education as required by Texas Education Agency and the Texas Administration Code and you currently meet the requirements for a content area with your earned college course work, then you may be eligible to be admitted on a Provisional basis.
  • Spring graduates may apply January 1st - May 1st
  • Summer graduates may apply June 1st - August 1st
  • Fall graduates may apply September 1st - December 1st

To qualify for the Provisional admittance the following documentation must be provided by the above deadlines:

  • Copy of final semester schedule of classes
  • Letter of completion from Academic Advisor
  • Official Transcripts through previous semester

Once you are accepted as a provisional candidate in the alternative certification program you are eligible to test and begin your coursework. Provisional candidates who seek standard admissions must meet all general admissions requirements and must provide an official transcript reflecting a conferred degree prior to receiving a Statement of Eligibility.

TExES / ExCET Testing:

Any previously passed test or tests do not guarantee admission for any certification areas without first meeting the program standard for certification content areas as noted on the Certification Area Requirements page of the website and compliance with the state registration requirements.

Program Status:

does not provide individually prepared letters of professional standing or verification of a Texas educator's certification status.
